Beat The Heat, Not Yourself Up About It

You don't have to love training in 90-degree heat. You just have to be smarter about when you do it.

It's July in Reno. The trails are packed by 8am, the lake is calling, and by noon the sidewalk practically radiates heat back at you like it's trying to finish you off personally. I get it. The last thing anyone wants after baking outside all day is to walk into a gym and do it again on purpose.

Here's the thing though: heat is a legitimate reason training feels harder right now. It's not a good enough reason to skip it for two straight months and then wonder in September why nothing feels easy anymore.

The fix isn't complicated, it's just early. Beat the sun to the punch. Get your session in before the heat even shows up for work, (we have classes starting at 5am - just saying) and you get all the benefit without any of the "why does breathing feel like this" misery that comes with pushing hard at 2pm in July.

So set the alarm a little earlier than you'd like to, show up while it's still cool enough to tie your shoes without sweating, and let future-you thank present-you for not taking the summer off.

You'll still have plenty of daylight left to go hit the trail, or the lake, or the porch with a cold drink. No judgment either way.
