"I live at 4,500 feet, so am I'm basically getting altitude training?" I hear some version of this a lot, and the honest answer is: sort of, but probably not the way you think.

Altitude training is a real, well-documented tool. Endurance athletes have used it for decades to boost red blood cell production and aerobic capacity. But the research is pretty specific about what it actually takes to trigger those adaptations, and it's worth knowing where Reno does, and doesn't fit in.

First: What Real Altitude Adaptation Actually Requires

The classic research on altitude training actually points to a fairly narrow window. Meaningful increases in erythropoietin (the hormone that drives red blood cell production) and blood volume generally require elevations upward of around 2,000 meters, roughly 6,500 feet, sustained for several weeks. The practical advantage isn't some passive Reno-elevation bonus. It's that your trail runs, ski days, and hikes in the sierras or Tahoe can routinely expose you to the legit altitude stress that someone training exclusively at sea level never gets. You're not getting a free ride, but you are getting some good access to the real thing.

Reno's elevation alone won't do the work of a dedicated altitude camp, and it's worth being honest about that instead of assuming the number on a map is doing more than it is. What actually matters is how you use what's around you: taking the trips up to Tahoe seriously as training stimulus, respecting hydration needs at elevation (dehydration happens faster in thin, dry air), and calibrating effort by heart rate rather than assuming your sea-level pace should feel the same up here.
